Abstract
Metaverses aspire to change the worldview and perception of the Self from the digital context of virtual reality. The avatar will affect the way we understand interrelationships, overturning deep-rooted precepts of gender identity (GID). These immersive discourses will be mature in approximately a decade, a horizon that coincides with the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development of the United Nations. Among its objectives, Gender Equality stands out, a concept that in democracy is understood from a liquid dimension. The study aims to understand the implications of avatar-mediated interrelationships with respect to IdG within advanced VR environments. The methodology is based on a documentary review and a questionnaire regarding how avatars in metaverses are interpreted as a reflection of the IdG. A Likert scale was applied to compare the findings among 432 Spanish university students of generation Z. A decalogue of the metaverse is developed that gives rise to a brief state of the art. The participants are mostly tolerant of metaverses as spaces for the development of the IdG. It is concluded that the metaverses will enrich the concept of the identity Self and expand the gender perspective among new generations. Keywords: Metaverse, gender identity, avatar, virtual reality, new generations. Metaverses and avatars.
